  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour and spices, one with buttermilk, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat each onion piece in the flour mixture, then dip in buttermilk, followed by the breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry onion petals in batches until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes), then drain on paper towels.
  6. For the dipping sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, horseradish, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
